The mission of the Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC) is to provide neutron-based research opportunities to support and promote innovative basic and applied material science research across a wide range of disciplines, and serving both national and international users. Furthermore, the BNC is committed to conducting in-house research, supporting reactor operations, and enabling its scientific staff to engage in joint research projects. Additionally, we assist instrument scientists in promoting and delivering commercial services to industrial clients.
The BNC operates as a department within the Institute for Energy Security and Environmental Safety, comprising five specialised groups:
- Mesoscale Structures Group
- Nuclear Analysis and Imaging Group
- Neutron Optics and Diffraction Group
- Heritage Science Group
- Technical Development and Support Group
as well as a User Office to facilitate close integration and support for the neutron research community.
Beyond developing neutron-based instruments and methodologies, the researchers and engineers of the BNC engage in both basic and applied research across multidisciplinary fields. Their studies cover a wide range of topics, including photosynthesis, medical and pharmaceutical materials research, heritage science, energy storage, materials development, porous materials analysis, electronic waste recycling, real-time process monitoring, neutron optics advancements, and nuclear data measurements and calculations. These include reaction cross-sections, nuclear structure data, and the development of spectroscopic data for activation analysis.
Maintaining an open-access user programme by coordinating the scientific use of the Budapest Research Reactor and providing world-class scientific infrastructure for the international user community is a key mission of the BNC. Currently, we offer 16 experimental stations with a number of allied table-top instruments.
The BNC actively participates in transnational user access programmes for topic-oriented research, including E-RIHS (heritage science), CERIC-ERIC and ReMade@ARI – LENS (materials science). The BNC is also a key participant in the NEPHEWS programme, one of the largest transnational access projects under Horizon Europe.
