In 2026, the international project “Visegrad Support to Serbia’s Workforce Development for a National Nuclear Program” was awarded funding by the International Visegrad Fund. The project aims to strengthen Serbia’s human resource development and professional capacities in support of its emerging national nuclear programme, with a particular focus on nuclear safety and security. Running from October 2026 to March 2028, the initiative promotes knowledge transfer, practical training and regional cooperation by drawing on the expertise and experience of the Visegrad countries. The project is coordinated by the University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Sciences (Serbia), in partnership with the HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research (Hungary), Research Centre Řež (Czech Republic) and the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (Slovakia).
The project will begin with a national needs assessment to identify priorities and gaps in nuclear education and workforce development in Serbia. Key activities will include specialised training, practical workshops and study visits to partner institutions. A five-day international workshop on nuclear safety and security will be organised in Novi Sad, covering topics such as nuclear forensics and radiological crime scene management. In addition, six selected students and early-career professionals will have the opportunity to visit Visegrad partner institutions and gain first-hand experience of their research infrastructure and professional practices. The project will also support the development of two standardised university training modules and the preparation of policy recommendations to strengthen nuclear education and workforce development in Serbia. Further information is available on the official project website.
The project officially commenced with an online Kick-off Meeting held on 21 October 2026, bringing together representatives of all partner institutions. During the meeting, participants reviewed the project objectives, agreed on the planned activities and their implementation schedule, clarified responsibilities among the partners, and identified the next steps towards successful project implementation. The meeting laid the foundation for the forthcoming 18 months of joint activities and further strengthened scientific and educational cooperation between Serbia and the Visegrad countries. More information about the Kick-off Meeting and upcoming project activities is available on the project activities page.
The project is supported by the International Visegrad Fund, with additional financial support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea.
