The Neutron Optics and Diffraction Group has three main activities. Conducting atomic resolution structural investigation using neutron diffraction, developing neutron optical devices, and improving the BNC instrument suite in collaboration with instrument scientists. The group operates three monochromatic neutron diffractometers, a time-of-flight neutron diffractometer, a moderator testing station, and a general neutron optics test facility. The diffractometers are accessible to both the national and international user community through excellence-based grant applications.

  • PSD – monochromatic thermal neutron diffractometer
  • MTEST – monochromatic thermal neutron diffractometer
  • ATHOS – monochromatic cold strain scanner
  • TOF – time-of-flight thermal neutron diffractometer

The neutron sources required for operating the instruments are provided by the Budapest Research Reactor.

Main Research Areas:

  •  Development of “Low dimension” cold moderator
  • Development and design of neutron guide systems;
  • Development of neutron optical elements
